Aurelie
Supporting Volcano the Bear in Ulverston, 28th November 2009.
Press release:
From the people that brought you the FON FESTIVAL.... 44 promotions and Octopus present live performances from the uncategorisable Volcano the Bear, post- rock behemoth Arificeden, Ambient improvisers Aurelie and DJ sets from Shengi and Mr Sushi, with thanks to Renaissance Theatre Trust and the PRS Foundation.
Although currently touring nationally Volcano the Bear have shied away from live shows in recent years and this is a unique opportunity to catch them in a intimate space. While often bracketed with Sonic Youth, Comets on Fire, the Residents and Jackie-O MF, Volcano The Bear are a unique and unpredictable and unforgettable live experience.
“Volcano The Bear have produced some of the finest, wildest British music of the last 10 years on record and on stage…” (The Wire)
"Their style is borne of fragments as wide ranging as art rock encompassing the demented elements of Henry Cow: a restoration of avant gardism, like an unhinged Residents and a very real sense of eccentric English psychedelia that surpasses the acid madcap shrills of it’s greatest usurper, Syd Barret." (Mark Barton, Losing Today)
Arficeden's widescreen instrumental psychedelia puts them in the front rank of the regions more adventurous rock bands, driven by Barrovian powerhouse Dan Payne on Drums alongside Paul Metcalfe (Guitar) and Stuart Metcalfe (Bass/ Sampling), they were the outstanding band on the Preston Institute of Noise tour which came to Lancaster and Barrow last year.
Cumbria / Midlands based improvisers Aurelie open the show. The band on this occasion comprises Glenn Boulter, John Hall and Jim Tetlow on a variety of conventional instruments, samples and homemade equipment. Aurelie arrive fresh from playing two nights at the Royal Opera House , Covent garden, where along with Barrow's Damian Rose they performed a version of the Barrow AFC Drone Opera " An Unorthodox 1-2" as part of the Firsts '09 festival.
